W Hotel

As autumn gets wetter and chillier, the basic urge to sit in cozy candlelight while holding a strong drink in one hand and a warm sandwich in the other becomes overpowering. Luckily, there’s a downtown happy hour that’s practically built to fulfill this need: the W Hotel’s annoyingly-named- but-still-irresistible QWENCH, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Whether your aim is to hobnob with out-of-towners or simply show another local a good time, the W’s lemon drop, a tangy mix of Stoli Citrus and freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice served in a sugar-rimmed glass ($6, like all happy-hour “drops”), is a fashionable complement to the hotel lobby’s playfully chic decor. Lounge on a sofa, fainting couch, or furry pillow and enjoy $1 “mini-grinders” (grilled finger sandwiches made with high-end savories like Gruyère or brisket) as more than a dozen candles create an ambience stuck between gothic grandeur (via hundreds of bad music videos) and upscale interior-design catalog. Still, the actual happy-hour crowd is surprisingly down to earth, the people watching is hard to beat (swanky hotel = glamorous guests on parade), and those little sandwiches are exceptionally good. 1112 Fourth Ave., 206-264-6000.
