This weekend a few friends and I had dinner at Saba Ethiopian

This weekend a few friends and I had dinner at Saba Ethiopian Restaurant, which is the Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant in Seattle I always recommend to vegetarians since Saba’s veggie combo plate is twice as varied as at any other place in town. Green salad, greens, firfir (a sort of injera-tomato salad), gingered potatoes, at least five distinct lentil dishes…That and a bubbling pot of shiro (a ground chickpea stew enriched with spiced butter) will feed three people, for about $30. The bar has a good selection of Ethiopian and Northwest beers, plus a full shelf of liquor bottles. When it came to decor, though, Saba was never much to look at: black-and-white linoleum floors, a functional bar, everything tatty. But I wonder if the owners haven’t taken note of the success of Habesha in the Denny Triangle. They’ve completely renovated Saba, laying down hardwood floors and repainting the walls in earthy hues. They’ve even put vases of fresh flowers on every table. And all this without raising the prices. I haven’t gone to Saba often enough to register the ebb and flow of the crowds, but on a Saturday night it appeared that the remodel paid off. The place was packed, with more than a few three-generation families sharing tables. I don’t think we would have ordered another round of drinks and spent quite so long plucking off pieces of sauce-soaked injera had the room not been so comfortable.
