The Stop: University Street StationThe Vibe: By 7:30 on a weekday morning, men and women in Goretex trench coats are rushing through the streets of Seattle’s business district to offices high up in the skyscrapers. And on every block there are delis and coffee shops serving up pre-made breakfast sandwiches and coffees to the suits. Most of these little markets can have a slightly chaotic feel. But there is a place where you can quietly nosh a sausage and egg muffin and sip coffee in near quiet, with little more than the sound of carols playing lightly in the background. The Cafe: The atrium in the building formerly known as Washington Mutual Tower (1201 Third Ave.), sits so close to the University Street tunnel entrances that the standard Seattle morning drizzle barely has time to dampen your shoulders. For the hungry rail commuter, coming in from the south end, the atrium is also home to two cafes. The atrium is quieter than other morning downtown breakfast spots thanks to being somewhat difficult to find. You either have to go through the building itself or locate the narrow set of stairs in the middle of University that leads to one of the Melange Market branches (224-7007). A stock of sandwiches and breakfast burritos, all for less than $2.50, sits over warmers in the hot food bar. Joyce will help you face the day. After picking up your morning entree, head into the atrium where Ellen’s Coffee Company (224-7415) has been serving lattes for almost a decade. Barista Joyce is a lifelong friend of the family and has been managing the small coffee shop for nearly as long as it’s been in operation. “Are you from out of town?” she asks, possibly in reference to my choice of leggings and a sweatshirt rather than the standard business casual dress of most of her patrons. Joyce is the kind of morning person that works out before her early shift slinging cappuccinos and her enthusiasm for the day rubs off. Coffee and breakfast sandwich in hand, I find myself in a surprisingly good mood for someone up and downtown before the sunrise. After rounding up your breakfast from the two small cafes, you have your choice of tables near the atrium’s enormous windows. It’s an ideal place to start your day in peace and near-quiet, watching the workers scurry past.
