The Stop: Othello StationThe Vibe: As we’ve observed previously, Othello is Little Vietnam (with a dash of Mexico). In addition to the stop’s distinct ethnicity, it’s also one of the more developed locations on the light rail line, with three mini-malls all sitting directly across from the station. That’s a good thing on a weekend of flood-inducing rain–especially if you just spent the morning draining your sinuses with a Neti pot thanks to finally succumbing to that cold everyone seems to have. The Cafe: King Plaza, the largest of the stops commerce centers, is filled with Vietnamese clothing stores, delis, and dental services. But between the clogged sinuses and the pouring rain, I was scanning the signs for one word: pho. And then I spotted it, on the second floor of the corner nearest the station above a pharmacy, Pho My Chau (7101 Marting Luther King, Jr. Way S., 725-8776.)A quick dash through the weather and I was inside, waiting with dozens of Vietnamese families (always a good sign.) Men carrying trays of steaming bowls of noodle soup burst from the back kitchen, while on a flat screen hanging over the dining room, a pair of Vietnamese pop stars belted out a ballad in front of a screen of digital fire. I hadn’t even ordered and I felt better already.Rid yourself of phlegm by looking to the heavens (aka second floor of King Plaza.) I ordered a veggie and a steak and meatball pho for a friend sleeping off an all-nighter (and also so I could snake a meatball for my soup.) The total bill came in at an even $13.Thanks to Than Brothers, I’m always a little disappointed when there isn’t a cream puff on the side. But the pho itself was more satisfying than the chain’s with flavorful broth and plenty of veggies beyond the obligatory sprouts and basil. The soup warmed me to my very center and the jalapeno and siracha fired out any remaining snot from my sinus cavity. So next time it’s pouring rain and you have as much fog in your head as there is rolling in from Puget Sound, jump the cafe car and head south for the amazing healing powers of pho.
