The simply gorgeous chocolate butter cookies on cover of the 2007 holiday baking issue of Cooks Illustrated (right) made me purchase pastry bags and tips for the first time in my life. This annual compilation of recipes is worth pure gold for the occasional baker, as every recipe has been written and tested exactly for you. The 2009 issue (left) is chock full of great recipes: Parker House rolls, gingerbread made easy, challah, baklava, perfect fudge, and a brown sugar shortbread that rivals Macrina’s. Even though a majority of the recipes are new each year (all but two in the 2009 edition), I almost didn’t buy this year’s issue.Holy error in art direction… Her recipes may not have the same success rate, but Martha would never allow such a faux pas. Anyone got a copy of the 2008 issue?
