The Original Bakery in West Seattle is one of those bakeries that seems like an eternal truth: The shelves are still stocked with fresh-baked white bread, not ciabattas or crusty loaves of cranberry-walnut 17 grain. There are always a couple of older guys parked at the tables, hiding behind their newspapers, and at least one momclique talking feverishly just to hear adult sounds. The bakery case has all the Bismarcks and crullers that Mighty-O doesn’t make, and every Friday the Original Bakery fries up a big batch of applesauce doughnuts. They always sell out by early afternoon, the woman behind the counter told me a few weeks ago when I dropped by and discovered the Friday special. One bite and I could see why: The glaze buckled and cracked when I bit in, and the applesauce made the cake crumb moist and fruity. You have about four hours left before this week’s batch disappears.Original Bakery 9253 45th Ave. S.W., 938-5088. WEST SEATTLE
