With the emergence of the sun and slightly elevated temperatures, it makes sense that local breweries are leaving behind their heavy winter ales and turning to lighter, brighter offerings. One such beer is the Saison from Boundary Bay Brewery in Bellingham. Infused with orange peel, juniper, and green peppercorns, it offered a bright citrusy nose that also showed plenty of herbal notes. As saisons tend to be, it was highly carbonated and had a slight sweetness that meant it went down real easy. It’s currently not available anywhere besides their tap room, but if you find yourself in Bellingham it’s well worth the trip.

Zach Geballe does a lot of drinking. When he’s not working at The Dahlia Lounge or for his business Vine Trainings, he’s studying for the Court of Master Sommeliers Exam. His weekly column here at Seattle Weekly, The Bar Code, endeavors to inspire, educate and sometimes poke fun at all things beer, wine and spirits related.
