The Cinco de Mayo cocktail from Barrio most certainly is the polar opposite of the $2 coronas and shit tequila shots that will no doubt abound around town manana. Called the “Tequila por Mi Amante,” it consists of Sauza Hornitos Reposado Tequila which has commingled with fresh strawberries for three weeks. In a tequila rut? This drink will get you thinking about all the things you and tequila have never done together. The restaurant opens at 11:00am and will feature an all-day happy hour menu and pitchers of Tecate ($10) and sangria($12). Bonus margarita lore: One of the stories about where margaritas come from attributes Margarita Sames, a Hollywood-connected society lady, to creating the cocktail at her home in Acapulco. (That’s the dame herself at right.) She desired something beyond the bloody mary or screwdriver, something using the local spirit of tequila. This was in 1948. No confirmation on whether the margarita started as a breakfast cocktail, but if it did, I dig it all the more. The original recipe: 2 ounces of tequila, one ounce of Cointreau, and lime juice shaken and strained into a wide, salt-rimmed glass.
