The chocolate superfood.Have you ever browsed the raw food section of Whole Foods? The one on Westlake has a pretty awesome selection near the produce. Cool new products seem to pop up all the time, from raw cookies to mousses to this brand new raw chocolate. This sweet treat is made with a five mushroom blend, which includes reishi, shitake, mesima, poria, and turkey tail. It’s alive with other pure ingredients, too, like raw cacao beans, raw agave nectar, raw cacao butter, raw cacao powder, raw maca powder, blue-green algae, vanilla bean, mint oil and Himalayan salt. But forget all that, because looking at the ingredients might turn you completely off of trying this wonderful item from Flow Foods. Let’s look inside the box….Creamy chocolate chunks. There is another raw chocolate on the market that I sometimes buy. It’s from Go Raw and it comes in a little gold box, each chocolate square wrapped in red foil. It’s really good, but really sweet and fudgey and melts in a hot second. This Chocolatl chocolate tastes more like your traditional chocolate. It’s truffle-like and really easy on the palate. There are several flavors to chose from including Mystic Mint which has a fantastic flavor. Really, it’s comparable to any high-end candy bar you’d find at the market. You would never know this chocolate was raw or contained mushrooms if you didn’t read the box (or this column). It doesn’t taste ‘weird,’ but it might taste a little different to those used to eating Hershey’s or other more traditional chocolate brands. The Chocolatl chocolate doesn’t need to be refrigerated, but it does need to be kept in a cool, dry place. One serving is more than enough to satisfy a sugar craving, and only packs 190 calories. I don’t want to tell you that you can eat as much raw chocolate as you want without gaining weight, but this type of treat digests pretty easily in your system and is packed with nutrients, which means it’s less likely to stimulate those carb cravings after you eat a few pieces. It truly is a chocolate that isn’t candy.
