So I was killing time in this other wine shop yesterday (which shall remain nameless), and I asked for a red, something lighter and French or Italian for under $10. I was *told* that those are harder to come by these days with the Euro and all, but when I saw my choices, I realized I had practically bupkis. Unacceptable. Two steps into City Cellars (1710 N. 45th St.) and my knees are knocking up against a stack of Domaine du Couron Malbec ($10, spicy, rich fruit, great for a roast) which butts up against a stack of The Best Little $10 Pinot Noir From France, from Domaine de la Rochette in the Loire (very light, pretty aroma, almost too drinkable), and a shelf filled with wines from around the world that all retail for $10 or less. 100, to be exact. Why doesn’t every wine shop do something similar? Times is hard, and if a customer will make the effort to make an extra trip for your product–instead of just picking up a bottle or three at QFC–make it as blunt as possible for them. I also picked up a $6 bottle of Barbadillo palomino. normally a grape for sherry. This wine is super crisp, with light citrus and apple flavors perfect for kirs, cocktails, and the holiday bar. I was in and out of City Cellars in two minutes flat.
