Snagging a barstool here even at happy hour is a feat; must be the legions of self-employed beer lovers in West Seattle. One of the top two burgers* on the almost-isle, Elliott Bay always has something noteworthy and in excellent condition on nitro, and right now that’s Hale’s Cream Ale–creamiest of heads, nose like a sweet citrus scone, and as easy as Wendy Feegus**. Also check out the Spire Mountain’s Dark and Dry cider guest tap, which is produced by Fish Brewing and changed my opinion of Spires, normally way too sweet and far too simple. Elliott Bay’s own Hoppus Collosum, a double I.P.A., needs no further commentary. It’s all in the name, and the smell…gorgeous. At 8.5% alcohol, it’ll put you on your ass. E-Bay runs happy hour specials 3:00-6:00 p.m. and again from 10:00 p.m. until close, with $1 off tap beer and food specials. (Elliot Bay Brewing Company, 4720 California Ave. S.W., 932-8695)
