Serious Eats has a post today lamenting how the switch from metal to biodegradable corn-starch spoons has damaged the experience of eating ice cream. Overheated rhetoric aside, man, do I disagree. After a week of eating ice cream for heat-stroke prevention purposes, not only do I love the rounder, deeper bowls of the spoons Poco Carretto, Molly Moon’s, and Bluebird use, but also the matte, satiny feel of the starch plastic — the way it keeps the the chill of the ice cream for your tongue alone, yet doesn’t feel as slippery and sharp-edged as traditional plastic. Just as satisfying is the way the biodegradable plastic warms up and softens in the mouth, too. A former smoker with twitchy fingers, I find myself, meal after meal, working the spoons into shovels, scoops, and curlicues.
