Say goodbye to Curio Confections. Owner Maria Friedman is closing the University

Say goodbye to Curio Confections. Owner Maria Friedman is closing the University District shop after one year. “I’m closing because, well, I’m exhausted!” says Friedman. “I’m hoping to sell Curio to someone who can continue the legacy, but to do that, I need time to look for someone and get my finances in order and clean up.” Friedman says the business is actually doing quite well. The problem is that she likes to bake more than she likes to manage. “It’s gotten to the point where I have to deal with so many customers that I don’t even have time to make candy or do anything I set out to do in the first place. I want to see it thrive, and for that, someone else needs to take the reigns.” Now, about those free pies…On Sunday, May 23, she’s giving away free pies from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.. “I am going to try to make as many pies as possible and give out free slices. Some of my friends are also going to make and bring pies to add to the festivities and it would be really cool if a lot of people did that to celebrate adventure baking and all,” says Maria. “It is also the one year anniversary of the shop because I told myself I’d stick it out for a year. And now? I’m going to run off to the circus.”
