Right next to the Starbucks on the cobbles in the market lies a store known only as the Mexican Grocery on any and all reference guides. I’m here once a week for fresh tortillas (or bags of masa, if you’re crafty) and cheeeeeeese, little hunks of crumbly, tangy, salty cotija that sell for as little as two bucks a bag. When compared with the price of Italian ricotta salata and the fact that this cotija hails from within the city limits, it’s just the right thing to do.
