Our tribute to the holiday services provided by Seattle’s Best Dive Bars

Our tribute to the holiday services provided by Seattle’s Best Dive Bars continues with Poggie Tavern (4717 California Ave. S.W.). When I used to walk by Poggie’s in the morning, the smell threatened to drag me back to a very specific time and place, my first grill jockey job in a one-horse town’s only (dive) bar in Nowhere, Illinois. This was before dive bars were part of the hipster habitat. There’s nothing like the smell of a just opened tavern, the comingle ing aromas of old beer, Marlboros and cleaning products. Poggie’s smells like this all the time, made all the more pungent when approached from the south as the fresh baguette stench of Bakery Nouveau and that of Poggie’s meets. Kinda like Gandolf and Saramon.Poggie’s runs happy hour every day from 5:00-7:00pm, which amounts to discounts on all the beer (open daily 10:00am to 2:00am).
