On Serious Eats, former P-I critic Leslie Kelly has been writing a regular series called “Critic Turned Cook.” To date, her entertaining posts have described her internships at Dahlia Lounge, Serious Pie, Betty, and Shultzy’s. Now, she writes, she’s looking for a job.Why should you hire her? With only a few months of restaurant cooking experience, Kelly probably needs extra training and oversight. And she probably doesn’t have the energy and endurance of the 25-year-old cooks competing against her for your open position. Then again, why not hire her? Reportedly good-natured (we’ve never met, but know people in common), Kelly has years’ worth of experience tasting and talking about food, and she’s not going to try and shove a bunch of awful fresh-out-of-cooking-school ideas down your throat. Plus, hiring her guarantees your restaurant national exposure, possibly even immortality in a future book.Clearly, the pros outweigh the cons. You’d be a fool not to at least bring her in for a tryout.
