Old Town Alehouse

Although it’s known primarily for its vast array of Belgian beers, this Ballard tavern offers a nice list of sandwiches as well, which are called “wedges.” Fair enough, but be advised that all of these wedges ($8.95) are by default spread thick with Old Town’s lemon-basil aioli—even the wedges that aren’t well suited to it. Feel free to request that they leave it off where and when it seems fit: The eggplant rustica, for example, should be left alone; the chunky marinara is more than enough adornment for the crispy breaded eggplant, and the lemony bite of the special sauce only confuses the smoky sweetness of the core ingredients. On the other hand, let the cooks slather away on your hot turkey pesto wedge. The aioli makes so much more sense when paired with smoked turkey breast and Gruyère. Sides and appetizers boast the kinds of bold favors that allow them to be heard over the din of clanking beer glasses, and we mean that in a good way. The beer selection makes this a venerable alehouse; the kitchen makes it a great place for dinner or lunch—just make sure you read the fine print on your menu. 5233 Ballard Ave. N.W., 206-782-8323.
