Hype can be a bitch. A new bar opens, talk of its greatness spreads quickly, and high expectations fall prey to another case of hopeful hearsay. Even our ingrown tendency to dis and dismiss was interrupted, however, by Nectar’s happy hour, which is doubly generous: It lasts four hours (3 to 7 p.m. weekdays) and gives you a heapin’ plate of nachos—served with plenty of salsa, herbed sour cream, and guacamole that’s actually good—for a mere $3. And if you think nachos are a tasty way to absorb those $4 pitchers of Bud (other non-Guinness pitchers are $6), try the plain cheese pizza ($5). At Nectar, two apps are like dinner for two, and though the excellent pear martini and other cocktails aren’t on the happy-hour menu, the bar’s friendly, accessible atmosphere and relaxing patio make it a fine addition to the growing armada of see-and-be-scenes that constitute New Fremont. 412 N. 36th St., 206-632-2020.
