Melons and peaches galore are on farm tables everywhere, but don’t let all that colorful fruity glamour distract you from the real debutantes this week.
There are bush beans of every variety longing to be blanched and sautéed with a little dab of bacon, there are bite-sized baby potatoes of every descriptionyellow, white, blue, red, and browncrying out to be steamed. Also distracting in their polychrome variety are the sweet peppers, not just red and yellow and green but lilac and beige. And a madness of heirloom tomatoes.
Now that basil‘s plentiful and local hardneck garlic‘s in season, it’s time to start planning a ratatouille, even if you can’t find local eggplant yet. Any day now, we’re told.
Meanwhile, sweet corn: Find a farmer who harvests it just before market time and cut a weekly deal for the whole season.
