Making the weekly stop to Curio Confections (5509 University Way N.E.) for lunch–spinach quiche and sweet potato soup–I caught owner Maria Friedman in the middle of a mound of nougat de Montillimar (cranberry and pistachio studded chews), a giant box of suckers, sheet pans of stained glass beautiful fruit gelees and miles of meringue. Curio is doing the hospitality suite at SteamCon this year, which runs today through Sunday at the airport Marriot in SeaTac. No Otis Spunkenmeyer cookies and bad coffee like the days of yore; you punks know how to live right. And yes, this is the most tenuous of threads so that we may post about one of the year’s nerdly joys, definitely the coolest of them all. Everyone should go once, if only to see how the other 1/2000 carry on and spy the glorious costumes. Oh if only you could have been downtown, SteamCon, so that you and BurlyCon (this weekend at the Comfort Inn) could comingle in a cloud of feathery, costumed, parasoled and chapeaued awesomeness of finery.
