Liberty

Liberty adds some much-needed variety to the small cluster of bars on Capitol Hill’s 15th Avenue East. With plush couches and fancy drinks, it’s more stylish than most of the places on this strip. Stopping by for happy hour (4–7 p.m. Mon.–Fri.), a friend and I enjoyed a few drinks and tucked into the bar food, which just happens to be, yes, sushi. At first this seems incongruous, but for the most part the sushi was not half bad. We shared a messily formed Sonic Scallop Roll ($4.50) that was quite tasty—though now I’m wondering if they’ll change the name. Also good was the hamachi (yellowtail, $6.66) and the Rainbow Roll ($5.75) with mango, cilantro, avocado, red pepper, and cucumber. The food does not go on special during these hours, but the drinks do, with $2 PBRs, $4 well drinks, and $3 drafts. I sipped a refreshing $5 Cosmo and my friend had an ultracheap $3 margarita. She’d heard Liberty mixes a great alternate version of the traditional drink, with vodka replacing the tequila, but the bartender disappointed us by being unwilling to make the switch. All in all, though service can be a bit spotty, we found the six-month-old spot a cool hangout. Hopefully it will stick around, giving us a place to break from beer and pub grub.
