Last Saturday, a group of us ladies dressed the hell up for a night at the Hotel Sorrento, equally as excited for Lori Goldston’s solo cello and Spectratone (the first Chamber vs. Chamber) as we were for our prime rib dinner in The Hunt Club beforehand. ($20-24 every Saturday night) The show was a lovely affair of sweet and earnest music making use of the lovable elements of cello, violin, accordion and xylophone. The dinner… meh. A huge thumbs up to the Sorrento’s effort to bring in a different crowd and trying new things. A thumbs down……for not paying as much attention to your restaurant and bar. There was but one bartender for a crowded restaurant and packed Fireside Room. You lost a boatload of alcohol sales that night. And as for dinner, our prime rib came out medium well when we had all ordered medium rare, with no time to correct because of the show. (A quick recon around the dining room showed a universal lack of pink in the prime ribs.) This is not a review but more of a plea, easily corrected. It’s actually pretty dang difficult to mess up prime rib; so next time don’t. If you want the yet-to-go-grey set, Sorrento, you must know something. We may not be able to afford the rooms upstairs like your older, moneyed crowd, but our expectations for food and beverage are quite high. Perhaps far higher than the blue haired set that peppers your dining room nightly. Next time you throw a party, back it up–staff the bar, have a wine and beer station, and be prepared for. That is, if you want that business because let’s face it, your other customers ain’t getting any younger…For Prime Rib: The small Meridian Market in Tangletown (2201 N. 56th St.) serves prime rib every Monday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. $14.99 gets you a slice of beef, mashed potatoes, veggies and a roll. My prime rib dinner from Meridian was a perfect medium rare. Yes, it’s a convenience store.
