It’s that time of week when we answer the questions you’re to drunk or shy to ask…This question comes from Terra: What is that thing at the bar that you press and it shoots water up in the glass? I thought it was some beer snob thing, but not everyone has one. That is a glass rinser, and bartenders use it for two reasons. Restaurants use big industrial dishwashers that can often leave a chemical smell in the glass; some people are more susceptible to it than others. I can smell sanitizer at ten paces. I’ve always hated that smell — it’s like a dirty pool. That blast of water helps to blow out any residue from the dishwasher that might color the taste of the beer. The other offense glass rinsing covers is that of the warm pint. I know some bars just get busy, the glassware dwindles, and they’re serving drinks faster than they can stock the glassware; but a cold tap beer in a hot pint glass is gross. The rinsers usually shoot out cold water to cool down the glass and put a little chill on things. What I’ve always wanted to know: All glasses go in the same dishwasher, so why just use the rinser on the beer glasses? Got a question for the bartender? Email me here: msavarino@seattleweekly.com.
