I had this gelato, from Gelatiamo, at Pike Brewing’s Chocolate and booze party just before Valentine’s Day. It is just as incredible as I remembered–a rich darker chocolate gelato made with Pike’s XXXXX Stout. Putting beer in chocolate and sweets sounds simple, but doing it well makes for a different story. It’s freaking difficult to get a true beer flavor, let alone that perfect bitterness without overdoing it. Often times the beer barely comes out at all in the final product. The stout comes through immediately in this gelato, adding a nutty and roasted note, even deepening the chocolate flavors. And as it slides across your tongue, a racy bitterness reveals itself, and the creamy treat becomes its own palate cleanser. Available by the scoop or pint all month. (Gelatiamo, 1400 3rd Avenue, 467-9563)
