Hey, bakey, why don’t you slip into something more soupy? When I was in grammar school, I refused to eat cheese unless it came on a pizza. My mother thought this aversion was psychological, so one day she served me white cheddar popcorn, which looks like regular popcorn but tastes nothing like it. Upon contact, I gagged. That learned my ma but good.I’ve since warmed to cheddar, as well as pepper jack and horseradish (aka, the white trash cheeses), but still can’t so much as stand the odor of parmesan. So imagine my surprise when I learned that my favorite supermarket deli soup contained parmesan cheese. The soup in question is TrueSoups’ baked potato soup, currently available at the West Seattle Thriftway (they also get their soup from Harry’s Soups in Portland). It tastes exactly like a loaded baked potato, only in liquefied form. I assumed it contained bacon; it contains nothing of the sort. I also assumed it didn’t contain parmesan. Wrong again. The full list of baked potato soup’s ingredients, according to WS Thriftway assistant deli manager Beth McCormick, is as follows: chicken broth, potatoes, half ‘n half, milk, cream cheese, salt, flour, green onions, corn starch, parmesan cheese, vinegar, potato flour, red pepper.
