FARM FRESH

Recognizing the integral role farmers markets play in communities across the state, Gov. Christine Gregoire has proclaimed Saturday, Aug. 12–Saturday, Aug. 19 Washington State Farmers Markets Week. Some of the fresh, local crops you’ll find in the markets this week include bi-color corn, pea shoots, wild summer chanterelles, and epazote (an intensely flavored Mexican herb, often compared to cilantro). Artichokes are available at the U District market, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturdays at University Way and Northeast 50th Street.

Perhaps you never got to race in the Soap Box derby as a kid and still have a deep-seated hankering to create and race your own car. Four farmers markets revisit this nostalgic pastime, with a twist: The cars will be made from zucchini. Squash, car parts, and decorations will be provided by the markets; it’s free for everyone, with no age limit. 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Saturday, Magnolia Farmers Market, 2550 34th Ave. W.; 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Sunday, West Seattle Farmers Market, Southwest Alaska Street and 44th Avenue Southwest. Trick out your bike and take a spin to Fremont for the Tour de Fat, sponsored by the New Belgium Brewing Company, makers of Fat Tire Ale. There’ll be a traveling cabaret, the Yard Dogs Road Show, and music from Drums and Tuba to enjoy with your beer. For a Sunday of competitive barbecue cookery, head over to the Second Annual Smokin’ Hot Invitational. Fifteen barbecue experts will include representatives from local breweries whose wares will also be available: Widmer Brothers, Skagit River Brewing, and Pike Brewing Company. Come early to watch your dinner being made—and perhaps the chefs will share some grilling secrets. The menu includes flat iron steak, brisket, gumbo, and smoked cornbread, as well as the winner of the dessert competition.
