Care for a tasty . . . chicken fetus? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “acquired taste” as “something that is not easily or immediately liked or appreciated.” In other words, if you didn’t grow up eating chicken feet for dim sum, chances are you’re not going to be a huge fan the first time you try it, or ever. Based on features like appearance, smell, and taste, here are the top five foods that require an acquired taste for you to fully appreciate ’em. 5. Natt? A Japanese breakfast staple, natt? consists of soybeans fermented with bacteria, eaten with rice and soy sauce. When stirred, it produces slippery strands that look and feel like mucus. It also has great health benefits (it’s super-low in calories, high in good bacteria and protein), but most people have trouble stomaching its snot-like properties.4. Marmite Made of yeast extract, Marmite is a dark-brown, uber-salty spread that the British slather on their crackers and toast. Starbucks UK even sells a Marmite and cheese Panini that here would likely sell terribly, given that Marmite embraces the aversion non-Brits have to its product by using the marketing slogan “Love it or hate it.”3. Hakarl A traditional Icelandic food, hakarl is fermented shark-meat cubes said to taste like cheese soaked in ammonia. Just how bad is it? Anthony Bourdain of No Reservations, who has sampled sheep testicles, seal eyeballs, and warthog rectums, still calls hakarl “the single worst, most disgusting and terrible-tasting thing” he has ever eaten.2. Balut Popular street food in the Philippines, a balut is a chicken or duck embryo boiled and eaten in the shell. Depending on how mature it is, it can look like a mass of cells or be recognizable as a bird. Either way, it’s a far cry from a cheddar-cheese omelet, and the thought of eating a fetus can make even the biggest egg enthusiast squeamish.1. Beer A beer drinker who claims it was love at first sip is a liar. It takes time to get used to, let alone appreciate, the bitter alcoholic beverage. And while beer culture (beer gardens, breweries, etc.) indicates otherwise, there are still plenty of people who never acquire a taste for a cold brewski on a hot summer day, whether it be Natty Ice or Chimay.Follow Voracious on Twitter and Facebook.
