Capers

You might go in for a sandwich and come out with a smart sectional couch. Or you might go in for a smart sectional couch and come out with a sandwich. Part home-decor shop, part eat-in/take-out cafe, Capers is a West Seattle institution for very good reason. The cafe’s signature sandwich, Aunt Pat’s Favorite ($6.95), is a good indication of Capers’ style: Immaculate strips of black-pepper chicken are neatly laid across Grand Central Bakery’s Como bread and dressed with Gorgonzola cream cheese and mango chutney. Slices of fresh pear add a tart snap. As she ate it, my friend remarked repeatedly: “I just love chutney.” The Mediterranean tuna sandwich ($7.95 whole, $4.25 half) is mayonnaise-free and delightfully light and balanced. Lemon–olive oil dressing, capers, Kalamata olives, and chives give the top-quality chunked albacore tang—but not too much tang. All sandwiches are served with a portion of simple mixed greens tossed in balsamic dressing; soups and salads are also offered along with the half-dozen or so sandwich options. Cookies, cakes, and espresso are there to tempt you afterward. 4521 California Ave. S.W., 206-932-0371. WEST SEATTLE
