If Carmen Miranda were in the market for a new hat, she would cast off her high heels and run to Seattle’s farmers markets. An explosion of berries hit all of the markets last weekend. In addition to the old standbys—raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries—the less common tayberries, marionberries, and currants can be found amidst the early summer abundance. Cherries, a festive Fourth of July favorite, are at their peak right now; sour pie cherries in particular have been drawing crowds. In addition, Olympia oysters have finally reached dry land and can be found at the Columbia City, University District, and West Seattle markets. In addition, fresh sockeye, king and coho salmon is still available at all markets. Salad lovers can also enjoy the newly ripe cone-shaped cabbage, as well as a wide selection of black and zebra-striped heirloom tomatoes.
