Destroyer, Wednesday, May 6: Destroyer songwriter Dan BejaraE™s flowery, narrative prose wraps the nut of a songaE™s message in a thick layer of surrealism, one that renders his meaning almost as difficult to decipher as an e.e. cummings poem. In tandem with BejaraE™s nasal sing-speaking, itaE™s safe to say that Destroyer is an acquired taste. But like an appreciation for fine wine, itaE™s a taste that, once acquired, not only brings the same measure of pleasure on the first go-round as the two hundredth, but those subsequent listens (or aEœsips,aE if you like) often unmask new linguistic subtletiesaE”puns, pop culture references, what have youaE”that you mightaE™ve missed on the first few dozen rotations. But itaE™s the instrumentals that help DestroyeraE™s compositional style retain its exciting freshness, even though thereaE™s been little sonic evolution over the thirteen years that BejaraE™s been releasing records. From the unbelievable organ solo in aEœQueen of LanguageaE (from 2000aE™s Thief) to the breakdown on Trouble In Dreams closer aEœLibbyaE™s First Sunrise,aE Dan BejaraE™s music is as layered and as intellectually absorbing as his lyrics are. While itaE™s best to experience Bejar in person after youaE™ve become familiar with his music, Bejar appears solo on this particular tour, which means itaE™ll be a little easier than normal to pick out the buried meanings and subtle jabs hidden in BejaraE™s bizarre wordplay. With Azida. The Crocodile, 2200 2nd Ave. 8 p.m. $12 adv. Note by SARA BRICKNER

Bat for Lashes, Wednesday, August 26: I wonder if David Lynch knows he has an English-Pakistani doppelganger running around named Natasha Khan, a modern musical mystic who includes Lynch as one of her major influences, goes by the stage name of Bat For Lashes and counts Thom Yorke and Ringo Starr among her fans. I wonder if heaE™s listened to her sing her ghostly songs about loneliness, fervent dreams and intense love or if heaE™s seen her creepy, startling music videos featuring dark woods and men with giant bunny heads and realized they could be clips taken straight from Blue Velvet or Inland Empire. I wonder if heaE™s seen her onstage in her costumes of fur and satin showing off her sparkling vocals and been reminded of the lounge singer from aEœTwin PeaksaE (although no Lynch muse has ever been able to jam out on the harpsichord or the autoharp like Khan does). I wonder if heaE™s heard her latest record, this yearaE™s Two Suns, a concept album about KhanaE™s alter ego, a blonde femme fatale named Pearl, and decided this girlaE™s just as alluring and mysterious as a certain Laura Palmer once was. Dirty Projectors, Wednesday, November 4:The New York trio (which adds two members when touring) is as easy to love as Animal Collective and as easy to hate as Vampire Weekend. It depends on how much credence you give to the charge that the Dirty ProjectoraE™s mad scientist David Longstreth blatantly rips off his predecessors, such as Frank Zappa, and/or appropriates the music of an entire continentaE”namely, Africa. To those of us who fall somewhere in the middle of these two warring camps, however, the trioaE™s arty indie rockaE”with its lush arrangements, angelic harmonies, and circuitous rhythmsaE”is just uncommonly good music. Before 2009, their efforts had confused and even enraged many, but the pop sensibility the Dirty Projectors injected into Bitte Orca, released in June, converted at least as many as it alienated. With Little Wings. Neumos, 925 Pike St. 709-9467. 8 p.m. $15 adv. Note by KEVIN CAPP

The Appleseed Cast , Wednesday, February 18: The second track on Appleseed Cast's sophomore album Mare Vitalis is possibly the best introduction to the Kansas-based band. TitledA Fishing the Sky, the song is a symphonically-composed movie score: sweeping guitars, passionate drumming and about 10 lines of lyrics. And those few vocals sounds as if frontman Christopher Crisci has experienced the most profound heartbreak of his life. Back then, in 2000, the band garnered comparisons to emo heroes Sunny Day Real Estate; now, nearly a decade later, the band has matured some. There's less angsty vocals and more harmonies on Sagarmantha, the Appleseed Cast's brand new full-length. Gone are the aggressive, hardcore-influenced guitars that marked even 2003's Two Conversations. But that doesn't mean Appleseed Cast has sacrificed musicianship for pop sensibility. Tracks like As the Little Things Go off Sagarmantha sounds like a slower version of Fishing the Sky: Sparse but poetic vocals over gentle guitars. After 10 years, the band members no longer need to scream to be heard. With Brier Rose, By Sunlight. Chop Suey, 1325 E. Madison St., 324-8000. 8 p.m., $10 adv., $12 dos. All ages.
