Stone River Boys, Wednesday, July 1: The Hacienda Brothers were sweet. They could achieve these peak moments (aEœA Lot of Days Are GoneaE is my personal fave) when cofounders Chris Gaffney and Dave Gonzalez channeled the ghosts of Doug Sahm and Gram Parsons. Unfortunately, liver cancer claimed GaffneyaE™s life in 2008, shortly after the release of Arizona Motel, arguably the best album the Haciendas ever recorded. By all accounts, Gonzalez was a shattered man. To cope, he has done what all great musicians do: bury himself in his music. The Stone River Boys have yet to ink a deal, but a handful of MySpace tracks sound pretty faE™n killer. Not unlike the Haciendas, Gonzalez fuses country-n-western and funky Southern soul into a gnarly brand of roots rock. As always, one of the main attractions is the dudeaE™s masterful guitarwork. ItaE™s truly awesome. With Chuckanut Drive. Tractor Tavern, 5213 Ballard Ave. N.W. 789-3599. 8 p.m. $15. Note by JUSTIN F. FARRAR

[Wednesday, December 31] Denver quartet DeVotchKa aE“ led by frontman Nick Urata aE“ has been at the forefront of this decadeaE™s neo-Balkan movement, what with all of their accordions, sousaphones, bouzoukis and Gypsy melodies. Still, the band has cross-pollinated that with some other sounds; UrataaE™s suave, melancholy croon sometimes has his group sounding like Morrissey or Bryan Ferry on a tour of Hungarian villages. And on this yearaE™s A Mad & Faithful Telling, the bandaE™s fifth album, DeVotchka incorporates sounds from the hills of Spain, the banks of the Seine, and wedding halls in Tel Aviv. With Norfolk & Western, DJ Kid Hops. Showbox at the Market, 1426 First Ave., 8 p.m., $35 adv., $40 dos.

Sleater-Kinney, Kennedy School, Portland, OR, May 2005: This was a particularly tough shoot for me. It was an editorial piece timed with the release of The Woods and I went down to Portland with the writer and SK's Sub Pop publicist. I've been a diehard SK fan since Dig Me Out and although I can't count the number of shows I've been to on two hands, it was the first time I had taken their portrait. We went out to dinner the previous night and Janet took us to Tennessee Reds for drinks and a game of pool afterwards.A The band was hesitant to do the interview for reasons I won't go into, but they ultimately agreed. One of them still wasn't on board and was vocal about her frustration and reluctance during the shoot the next morning. It was interesting to see the three of them process their decision and disagreement together as a band right in front of me.A  Although it was all very civil and respectful,A  I can't say I was too surprised when they announced The Woods would be their final album.
