Though it covers just one wall, don't let the size of the gallery fool you; after factoring in compilation books the amount of drawings are seemingly endless, and the stories behind the WWII veteran artists are fascinating.

The law legalizing same-sex marriage, which Governor Chris Gregoire signed last week, is almost certainly going to be challenged on the ballot in November. But forget for a second about the headaches brought on by the democratic process, and focus instead on the nine couples sucking face on our cover.Married couples come in all shapes, sizes, and--now with the blessing of Washington's legislature--chromosomal configurations. That we all share the same hopes and fears should by now be obvious. But just in case it isn't, we decided to ask each of our cover subjects for their answers to the question that's eventually asked of every pair: How'd you meet?We didn't do this by e-mail. And we didn't do it individually. To ensure the most When Harry Met Sally-like responses, we made sure that both representatives were on the line, whether by conference call or speaker, so that all their couple-specific quirks could be recorded for posterity. Small edits were made for space. But what you'll read in the next nine slides is as faithful a representation as we could get of how these couples actually talk to one another. When, of course, they're not using their lips for something else.

Hope Sandoval, Wednesday, September 23: At one time or another, most of us have sat around mooning over someone while listening to Mazzy Star's Fade Into You. It was so sweet. So touching. So...well, emotional! Mazzy Star hasn't released an album in over a decade now, but in the interim, singer Hope Sandoval began recording with My Bloody Valentine alum Colm O Ciosoig, and the two formed the Warm Inventions. 2001's Bavarian Fruit Bread continued in the vein of Mazzy Star's dazed and dreamy style -- tinkling bells, the occasional harmonica and delicate song arrangements, including a magnificent cover of Leonard Cohen's Suzanne. Sandoval's vocals are what pulled it all together, though - her famously slow, grave voice is genuinely beatific. The group's second album, Through the Devil Softly, comes out this month, and fans all across the Internet world are already gushing over the lead single, Blanchard. The tune features gentle guitars, nebulous backing vocals and sensitive lyrics, (I'm merely standing on holes in the ground/ If I fall, they'll never know where I'm found). Sandoval's heavenly voice is still the star. You'll feel like an adolescent in love all over again. With Dirt Blue Gene. Crocodile, 2200 Second Ave. 441-7416. 8 p.m. $20 adv, $23 dos. Note by E. Paramount Styles, Wednesday, Jan. 21, Sunset Tavern: With the notable exceptions of FugaziaE™s Guy Picciotto and Boss HogaE™s Cristina Martinez, few figures in the mid-aE˜90s punk scene possessed the aggressive sexuality and disarming stage charisma that Girls Against BoysaE™ Scott McCloud had in spades. With GVSB on hiatus for the most part (they still play random club dates from time to time), McCloud has turned that magnetic energy towards more contemplative, down-tempo territory with his new project, Paramount Styles. McCloud and GVSB took a spiritual and fiscal beating at the hands of the major label system, and the scars and wisdom that came with it are on full display on their debut, Failure American Style. Blessedly, itaE™s more heartrending than hateful, with McCloud relaying vivid tales about drunks, whores and dastardly music business people in his trademark husky growl. Uncharted territory? Certainly not, but itaE™s not without poignant potency. With Robert Roth, Red Jacket Mine. Sunset Tavern, 5433 Ballard Ave. N.W., 784-4880. 9 p.m., $8.Note by HANNAH LEVIN
