Dolly Parton at WaMu Theater: Given her iconic status and gregarious demeanor, I figured the show would be a treat, but I had no idea she would prove to be not only one of the most generous performers IaE™d ever seen, but a classically talented stand-up comedienne with letter-perfect timing.

Check Your Faux Service Dog at the Door: It is a shame that ignorance does not have a literal grasp of reality or the issues pertaining to our beloved canines that work in the service industry, as therapy dogs, law dogs (search and rescue, bomb detection, etc, etc) or even just being man (or womans) best friend. It seems that Taft is blinded by her hatred of dogs, specifically pit bulls, and fails to see that all dogs are wonderful in the right hands, just as any dog can become aggressive in the wrong hands. I wonder if Ms. Taft would be so opposed to pit bulls if she was in a situation where one was required to save her life. Fortunately for her pit bulls do not judge, but except all people as they are, whether they are decent or not. That seems to be their strength and her weakness. - Submitted by concerned dog lover

Bumbershoot: Three-Sentence Review of Death Cab for Cutie: Between the fantastic lighting and and perfect melody, Death Cab for Cutie's set was utter and complete ecstasy. After leaving 20 minutes early I was almost worried there would be no encore, but never fear: they closed out with a four song run of Title and Registration, No Sunlight, Tiny Vessels and Transatlanticism, and the fireworks raining down from the scaffolding made it a near-religious experience. Part of me wishes I'd seen Death Cab on a smaller stage in the not-so-long-ago era of The Crocodile, but the other half of me knows they deserve the glitz and giant mainstage bill... and there's no band I'd rather see to close out Bumbershoot '08.

The Wallingford sign above QFC. This used to be a FOOD GIANT sign, named for the store that predated QFC. When the sign was taken down in the late 90's, the neighborhood complained and QFC used all but two of the letters from the sign, added some more and created a neighborhood landmark.

PICK: The Dark Harbor: Dark is right. Friendless, luckless fisherman Manzo lives in a small Japanese village, not really content with his life but too lazy to do much about it. When the town arranges a social for the fishermen to meet some city girls, a clerk takes one look at lumpy, sad-sack Manzo and observes, A bit past it, aren't you? Indeed, Manzo (Shinya Kote) looks painfully uncomfortable in anything but his work overalls or favorite blue sweatpants. His idea of a good time is listening to rockabilly music and microwaving corn dogs. (Or in Japan, squid dogs?) Eventually, however, the comic melancholy is interrupted by a home invasionaE”a cute young kid and his mother take residence in Manzo's house while he's out fishing, then hide in the cupboards at night. And of course Manzo is going to fall in love with Mitsuko, and of course she's not quite what she seems. But since there's so little plot to The Dark Harbor, it's best not to mention any other particulars. The slow-moving deadpan tone recalls Aki KaurismA¤ki, and Kote's performance suggests a slightly more voluble Buster Keaton. In a rare burst of speech, he confesses, I'm suffocating here alone. If the interlopers are taking advantage of him, he reasons, it's better than corn dogs for one. SIFFgoers will agree. (NR) BRIAN MILLER Also: 9:30 p.m. Tues., June 9. 6:45 p.m., SIFF Cinema
