Hank III & Assjack, Wednesday, March 4: Nothing against Hank aEœAre you ready for some football?!aE Williams Jr. aE“ IaE™m sure heaE™s a swell guy and all aE“ but I only really have time for two members of that musical family: Legendary country pioneer Hank Williams and his grandson, charismatic cowpunk Hank Williams III, or simply Hank III. Both look almost exactly the same, aE™cept for the latteraE™s tattoos, both are killer songwriters, and, from all accounts, both share the same bad-ass attitude and lifestyle. YouaE™d be forgiven for thinking aEœP.F.F.aE (which stands for Punch, Fight, Fuck) aE“ a song on Hank IIIaE™s recent Damn Right, Rebel Proud aE“ is about Hank himself, but itaE™s really an ode to one of his favorites, infamous scum-punk G.G. Allin: aEœI drink a lotta whiskey, smokinaE™ all the time/IaE™m gettingaE™ fucked up every goddamn night/Everybody's doinaE™ cocaine and startinaE™ up fights/And IaE™m livinaE™ fast and hard and dyinaE™ hard with my goddamn/Loaded fists of fury, doinaE™ what I do/And IaE™m spittinaE™ in your face cause IaE™m dominatinaE™ you.aE Even when III and his band rock the traditional country instruments (acoustic guitars, fiddle, banjo, etc.) things get mighty rowdy; and when they reconfigure mid-show into Assjack, IIIaE™s straight-up hardcore/punk-metal outfit, you may want to consider taking cover. With Those Poor Bastards.A Showbox at the Market, 1426 1st Ave., 628-3151. 7 p.m., $20 adv, $23 dos. SOLD OUT. Note by: MICHAEL ALAN GOLDBERG

Jeremy Enigk, Thursday, May 14: In the past 15 years, Jeremy Enigk has presented himself as a handful of different musical personalities. First, there was the enigmatic frontman of Seattle's emo heroes Sunny Day Real Estate. (The band members granted few interviews and once famously sent fake versions of themselves to pose for a Nordstrom print ad.) There was Enigk's first solo effort, Return of the Frog Queen, a series of orchestral compositions that distanced his high-pitched voice from the screaming vocals and aggressive guitars that defined SDRE. When the band finally broke up for good in 2001 aE” the rumored cause that Enigk converted to Christianity aE” Enigk fronted The Fire Theft. With a similar sound and some of the same lineup as SDRE, it's no surprise that The Fire Theft's only full-length album, released in 2003, sounded like The Rising Tide redux. Gone was the emo angst of SDRE's first album, and in its place was the melodic, prog-rock style that has continued to define Enigk's solo work. Since then, Enigk's work has stayed within that same vein, and the soon-to-be relased OK Bear isn't much different. So, there's no chance that Enigk is going to bust out In Circles during a live show; instead he'll strain his vocal cords pushing to a near-falsetto and making up words like darium and mondrary. Then again, he might have created an entirely new identity, equally full of surprises. With the Lonely Forest, Baby Panda. Neumos, 925 E. Pike St. 709-9467. 8 p.m., $15 adv. All ages. Black Heart Procession, Wednesday, November 11:Funny, but not too long ago, indie rock scribes were debating over Black Heart Procession's aEœgoth-nessaE. Of course, that was the late aE˜90s, the height of the pre-commodity indie rock (remember how mind-blowing it was to see The Flaming Lips on the cover of Magnet?) But indie rock was actually pretty damned rippinaE™ back then, back when The Shins were still called Flake Music and Devendra was still a teenager. Near the top of the heap was Black Heart Procession, a group of San Diegans who seemed to avoid sunlight and play dark, Nick Cave-y rock music more suited for our soggy terrain than the sunny SoCal they called home. Their latest album, Six, feels like a summation of all that made them great back in the dayaE”the grim, romantically distressed tone of their first three albums meshed with the bright, pop songsmithery of Amore del Tropico and The Spell. With Bellini, El Olio Wolof. Chop Suey, 1325 E. Madison, 324-8005. 8 p.m. $12. Note by BRIAN J. BARR

[Wednesday, November 5] Composing avant music to accompany silent films has become a popular thing in the last couple decades, with local musicians like Bill Frisell and the Black Cat Orchestra finding new facets in old screen gems. The latest band aiming to marry mediums and eras is trumpeter Steven BernsteinaE™s MTO, a brilliant assembly of New York players who spent years together at the now-defunct Tonic creating good-humored, post-modern takes on the past century of American pop jazz. King Cat Theater, 2130 Sixth Ave. 547-9787. 8 p.m. $18. All ages.
