When they first meet, George (Stan Gill) and Doris (Laura Hanson) are both staying at a hotel sans spouses. They chat over drinks, and next thing you know, it’s morning and the two besotted/horrified hookup-ees are scrambling to put their clothes back on. Such is the setup for Bernard Slade’s 1975 chestnut Same Time Next Year (through June 28), a romantic comedy that follows a 25-year love affair in the same hotel room. The only change of scenery in the 90-minute production is the shifting context of the two lovers’ lives over the decades. (But you’d be amazed at how different that same hotel room can look to an outsider when George’s mistress shows up pregnant.) A play about adultery may seem like a reach for a playwright with such a wholesome TV resume (Slade wrote for Bewitched and The Partridge Family), but George and Doris’ affair is more about companionship than sex. You find yourself pulling for them, even if they are dirty rotten cheaters.
