This years Washington State Book Awards are being bestowed to six writers in categories including poetry, fiction, and history. For once, Sherman Alexie (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian) wont be the biggest name in attendance. Thats because David R. Montgomery just picked up a MacArthur Foundation Genius grant for Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations. But lets not forget about the hard-working, more unsung Matt Ruff (Bad Monkeys). Also among the honorees are poet Samuel Green, historian Coll Thrush, and illustrator Laura Dronzek. All will deliver remarks and sign copies of their work. Then theyll combine their superpowers to mend the economy, solve the energy crisis, and bring peace to mankind. Kidding! Unless on the page, of course, in which case anythings possible. BRIAN MILLER
