We’re at Opus 3 of this ongoing dialogue among the Henry’s curators, meaning some works from the permanent collection have gone back into storage, while others have been dusted off. The present arrangement is smaller and less diverse than Opus 2, but there are some nice additions. One is Alex Lieber’s I-Beam, a pair of jeans reconfigured upright and stiff like a metal girder. Everything soft and casual has been ironed out and made structural. Taken from his “American Sculpture” series, the work touches upon two sides of our consumerism–the ephemeral and the permanent. The economy depends on our pants wearing out–or going out of fashion–every year or two, but
I-Beam insists on its own durability. These jeans will never weather or fade, but neither can they be worn. BRIAN MILLER
