TXT

As group shows go, “TXT: Artists Investigating Language” is a mouthful of consonants. With some 20 disparate artists represented, including heavyweights like Jenny Holzer, text is an acceptable unifying conceit. You don’t look at the art here, you read it. Some objects are found, like a tombstone, photographed by Steve Davis, that sadly reads “Baby Found in River.” Some are constructed, like Lauren Grossman’s perched bird sculpture, its shape formed by a wraparound 3-D alphabet armature. But most are aphorisms in the manner of Barbara Kruger–carefully written pronouncements and ominous slogans. E.g., from Anthony Discenza, “Everything you’ve heard is true” and “Pretty pictures won’t solve anything.” BRIAN MILLER
