Tiny Vipers In-Store

Music

As the voice of hushed, heartfelt acoustic project Tiny Vipers, Jesy Fortino is on the road to what could very feasibly be a rich, storied career reminiscent of Kristin Hersh or Chan Marshall. This isn’t just because her husky-sweet vocals evoke both world-weary wisdom and an unshakable sense of sadness, but because the confidence of her delivery suggests an artist who’s going to be willing to take creative chances in the future. This becomes particularly evident on “Forest on Fire,” the unsettling mix of foreboding feedback and sirenlike benediction that arises about 15 minutes into Hands Across the Void, her Sub Pop debut. Fortino is mining uniquely dark territory here, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. The quieter, focused environment of this evening’s in-store is the perfect setting to take it all in, and pick up the new disc if you’re as moved. Sonic Boom Records, 514 15th Ave. E., 568-2666. 7 p.m. Free.
