Thurston Moore

Sonic Youth’s main man rocks on

As he moves toward his 50th birthday, the apparent timelessness of Thurston Moore seems unbreakable. At this stage, one would expect him to begin showing signs of being hopelessly out of touch with what the kids are into these days, and yet he saunters on, rocking show after show on the club and college circuit. Sonic Youth became gigantic during my transition years; enough to finagle a guest-star spot on The Simpsons. Listening to Moore’s Trees Outside The Academy, I’m struck by the mellow parallel the album exudes: where Psychic Hearts, his first true solo effort, mirrored the melodic noise of the mid-90’s Youth, here we’re given something that rides shotgun with the recent Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped releases, more Austin than L.A. Nevertheless, the acoustic twang cannot mask the musical chemist, and I’m left wondering whether Moore is evolving, or I’m standing still and just not noticing.
