Theres a reason the surfside smooch between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity is so endlessly quoted and parodied. Its one of the most classic images in cinema, an illicit interlude that cant last, an adulterous clinch near Pearl Harbor, in 1941, just before the world goes to hell. Fred Zinnemanns 1953 adaptation of the sprawling James Jones novel earned eight Oscars, and its a marvel of script condensationstill the towering model that Pearl Harbor, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and even The Thin Red Line sought to reach. The majestic cast includes Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift, Ernest Borgnine, and Donna Reed (who earned her Oscar for a very different sort of role than in Its a Wonderful Life). A restored print is promised, making this probably the best holiday movie in Seattle theaters. Runs through Dec. 27; closed Christmas Day. Wed., Dec. 19, 7:15 & 9:15 p.m., 2007
