Producer extraordinaire (and now murderer?) Phil Spector launched the girl-group revolution and created the formula for a sure hit in the 60s: breathy vocals, catchy melodies and embarrassingly simple lyrics. Fast forward to the present and British girl-group the Pipettes are a polka-dot clad, doll-faced trio that’s kept the heavy instrumentation characteristic of the early girl-group sound, but replaced the naïve lyrics with countless sexual innuendos in their cheeky debut We Are the Pipettes. It’s a smart charade—complete with synchronized dancing—that everyone gets and applauds. My father even took a listen and announced that oldies are still where it’s at.
