The GI continues to plumb the Hestonian with this 1971 adaptation of I Am Legend, which is surely more hammy and entertaining than the recent Will Smith version. The late Charles Heston stars in this post-apocalyptic tale of a rationalist and physicianseemingly the last man alive in L.A.battling a band of technophobic nocturnal mutants led by Anthony Zerbe. Its a fine example of confident, muscular overacting by its star: he mows down mutants with a machine gun; conducts soliloquies to a bust of Caesar; and plays chess against himself. But mainly hes just plain Heston. When other human survivors are discovered (a foxy black woman among them), it almost comes as a disappointment.
