A few years ago, model and musician Charlotte Kemp Muhl met a young fellow with a familiar-sounding last name backstage at Coachella; they began dating and jokingly started a band named after a play Muhl wrote when she was seven years old. Muhl’s new man was Sean Lennon, and the band was called The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, now a serious endeavor. “Once we started writing songs together it was clear there was something more to it,” Muhl told me in a recent email. “We write every aspect of the songs together, equally. Our band is like a two-headed animal; a chimera.” The duo’s first LP, last fall’s Acoustic Sessions, is dense and dreamy – Muhl says they were listening to a lot of Syd Barrett, Os Mutantes, and White Noise while they wrote it – “We are big fans of the experimental ‘folky’ music from the 60’s.” But GOASTT has already undergone a evolution since then – “We have evolved into a full-fledged rock band,” says Muhl. “We’re already working on an electric psychedelic rock album.” With Laura Gibson.
