The Foo Fighters

The day before my band’s second show, I got a call from SW blogger Krist Novoselic: “Do you play in a Foo Fighters cover band?” he asked. Damn. All I could stammer was, “I was hoping we would never have this conversation.” Yes, I play drums in I Pity the Foo, Bremerton’s premiere Foo Fighters cover band. But it’s a little embarrassing to be talking about it with Dave Grohl’s former bandmate in Nirvana, the bassist on some early FF demos, and the surprise guest at its 1999 “Deck the Hall Ball” set. At least he hasn’t seen us live. The Foo are impossible to imitate, which is why IPF isn’t a tribute band. I’ve been a fan for years, but never fully appreciated the subtleties of Grohl’s drumming until I tried playing “My Hero.” If you think it’s easy, you’re not playing it right. The band’s in town tonight supporting Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace and its single, “The Pretender.” I’m proud to be one. KeyArena, Seattle Center, 628-0888, www.ticketmaster.com. $25–$45.
