The Commodores

Clear the dance floor y’all—Hoss in the house! The Brick House, that is. Anyone who’s been to my City Hall winter holiday function knows that nothing pulls me away from the dessert buffet faster than that mightay-mightay drum fill leading into the most funk-tastic track of all time. And this weekend, when I bring Mak Daddy along to the Commodores’ show at the Queen, he and a few cocktail waitresses are going to see just how Hizzoner rolls when he shakes his Nickel-back. Throw a Commodores record on and, in my experience, you’ll get some behavior that’s three times as unladylike; so I can just imagine the action at a live show. True, this isn’t quite the original “Slippery When Wet” crew. Lionel Richie, of course, sailed on a long time ago, and my man Milan Williams is now playing keys for Marvin and Jackie on the Night Shift. But drummer Walter “The Zest” Orange—as I have dubbed him, by mayoral decree—is still on the throne. And when he kicks off that master tune, this Brick Hoss is going to rumble like a Pioneer Square landmark in the Nisqually earthquake. “Retro”-fit, indeed.
