The sketch comedy of Mike Mathieu and Andrew Connor, known as The Cody Rivers Show, has frequently been described as surreal, cerebral, and weird. While their latest production, “Right Back Where We Started,” is certainly all those things, it is funny above all. Their brand of comedy tends to be hyperactive–the moments in which they sit still are rare–but “physical comedy” doesn’t begin to describe the heady humor. The sketches often open with a deceivingly sentimental premise, and the audience is ever so slightly on edge–uh-oh, we think, this one’s going to be a dud. But the joke’s on us when the overly sincere guitar music gives way to hilarious breakup conversations and homicidal baby dolls. In addition to the duo’s talents for creating thoroughly unique sketches, this show puts their improvisational skills on display, to much success. Some of the evening’s finest moments were driven by audience participation. The show has a very limited run before they head out on tour (one more funny weekend!), so catch them while they’re in town. BRENT ARONOWITZ
