Talisman to Disaster

Tim Cross at SOIL.

You won’t find this striking ink-and-watercolor work hanging at SOIL, sad to say. You will, however, see similar pieces by artist Tim Cross, also depicting pretty, imagined disasters. I was lucky enough to catch Cross on his way out the door with this piece, and was stopped by the gorgeous splash of red flame, centered in a highly detailed drawing of an airplane on fire: a spill of watercolor and black-inked dots, all too pretty for the scene they represented. Cross told me that no, he did not have a fear of flying. But he does see this work (part of a series of plane crashes) as a way to exorcise his demons. Perhaps by depicting the worst, he is casting some sort of spell against such a thing happening to him.
