Silent Movie Mondays

After the unpopular and unexpected ouster of organist Dennis James last June, the keys will be manned by Jim Riggs for the fall series’ three titles. First up is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916), based on the Jules Verne novel, with vengeful Captain Nemo piloting his famously futuristic submarine the Nautilus. This adaptation actually includes elements of another Verne story, Mysterious Island, plus American soldiers who crash-land from their balloon. But the underwater photography–of selected scenes–was a very advanced special effect for its day. And battling sharks and man-eating octopi is always exciting. (NR) T. BOND
