In 1997, the Seattle Cherry Blossom and Japanese Cultural Festival hosted the creation of the world’s longest single sushi roll (101 feet). The following year, it exhibited the world’s smallest category of kites. Not to be outdone, volunteers in 1999 made Tofuzilla, a towering monstrosity consisting of 1,500 pieces of tofu. While this year’s festival (through Sun. April 20) isn’t looking to be a record breaker, it will feature performers from Federal Way’s Japanese sister city, Hachinohe, as a special gift. Japanese art, food, music, and martial arts will be on display at Center House and Fisher Pavilion. Parents can try their luck at Go, the traditional board game, then go for a round—or two—of sake sampling while the kids try on kimonos, make origami, and fly kites.
